When people talk about the French Riviera, then a picture formulates of a beautiful coastline with sandy beaches and the aqua blue Mediterranean Sea lapping on the shore. It is also known as the playground of the wealthy and luxury yachts abound in picturesque harbors.
The French Riviera is situated where the Alps meet the Mediterranean, it has a perfect climate from mild in the winter to warm and sunny in the summer. The largest city is Nice, but there are also charming towns and villages and do not forget Monaco which actually is an independent state.
Film directors flock to the Riviera both because it hosts the Cannes Film Festival that is one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world, and for its stunning location. Movies that have been filmed on the Riviera include Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Oceans Twelve, The Life Aquatic, To Catch a Thief, An Affair to Remember and of course the James Bond hit Diamonds are Forever.
Many of the hotels on the French Riviera are on a grand scale and are some of the most luxurious hotels in the whole of France if not even Europe. In this blog we look at some of the best hotels that exist on the Riviera and are popular destinations for wealthy tourists.
Cannes Hotel Martinez
This hotel has been wowing guests since the Roaring Twenties, in fact this grand palace of a hotel was built in 1929 to be the holiday destination of playboy millionaires, princes and potentates. The facilities are superb with its two Michelin star restaurant La Palme d’Or being the only one in Cannes. Staying at the Hotel Martinez is like staying back in the grand old opulent days before the wars. The hotel oozes class and the wonderful Art Deco architecture brings a certain sort of decadent feel to the whole hotel. Guests can partake in a heated pool and complimentary yoga classes.
The Carlton in Cannes is the most popular hotel during the film festival, and if you are lucky to reserve a room during this time then you will be most likely to be rubbing shoulders with famous actors and actresses in the elevator.
Apparently, Liz Taylor has stayed there with all seven of her husbands, there was an outrageous demand from Faye Dunaway on one occasion for gallons of goat’s milk to be brought to her room for her bath. The hotel is also big on charisma, just stepping through the entrance you know you are somewhere special. There are chandeliers highlighting the vast lobby space showing ample spaces of opulent marble.
Don’t miss out on the impressive Carlton Bar and the excellent Terrace as you will definitely see the rich and famous. The real luxury suites are on the seventh floor that have great balcony views from their private terraces that overlook the sea. In part two of Great Hotels on the Riviera we look at even more fantastic accommodation on the Mediterranean, including Hotel Beau Rivage, Grand-Hotel du Cap-Ferrat and Hotel Royal.
